Many Amateur Radio bands are shared with other services.
Sometimes other services have a Primary allocation, while Amateurs have a Secondary allocation.
Our 902 - 928 MHz band does not overlap some cellular and mobile telephone bands in Canada, but comes quite close. (Licence exempt cordless phones may use this band however)
Our 2300-2450 MHz band does overlap with some of the telephone wireless services, and 2.4GHz cordless phones.
While on the one hand, this requires that amateurs using these bands must be careful about causing interference, it also means that there is, and will continue to be a source of relatively inexpensive equipment which can be converted for amateur use.
Here are some of the details of telephone systems used in Canada (courtesy VE3XK).
