CANADA WINTER CONTEST – 2005 RESULTS
By
Sam Ferris, VE5SF, Bart Ritchie VE5CPU and Bruce Rattray
VE5RC/VE5QRP
The
Canada Winter Contest for 2005 ran early this year because of the overlap with
the holidays. With 291 entrants,
overall the contest proved to be a successful one, but down again in
participation from last year. The
timing of the contest may have contributed to the decline in entrants as
well. Propagation conditions were
also somewhat disturbed and subsequently no new records were established for the
winter contest. However, the 2006
running will be certain to see records for the new CW and Phone only categories,
which will be scored for the first time.

CANADA
WINTER CONTEST – 2005
Your
contest managers sincerely appreciate the increased use of Cabrillo based log
entries. Cabrillo files
significantly reduce the workload associated with producing the contest
results. Current versions of
popular contest programs such as CT, NA and TR produce Cabrillo files that can
be readily handled by our scoring software. Dedicated free of cost, DOS based
software available from the RAC website also produces readily usable
reports. As in the past we will
continue to accept paper logs and other electronic logging formats so it is easy
for everyone to send in an entry.
As we continue to develop log-checking processes, we would appreciate, if
possible, receiving your Cabrillo logs and summary sheets providing a breakdown
of VE, RAC, DX contact and a multiplier total. This will make compiling and checking of
logs an easier and quicker process.
Thanks
to all for participating in the 2005 running of the Canada Winter Contest and
good luck in 2006. Operator
comments are available on the RAC website.

Operator Comments: RAC
Canada Winter Contest 2005
AC0DH:
very bad propagation. EA4RCT: Really bad propagation this year. Nothing
heard on 10, 15 and 80. Thanks to everybody who called us, specially VY1JA. See
you next year. EA8ASJ: Very good
contest, Tks and to nex aid. 73.
G0MTN: Only part time this year – sorry. G3ORY: As enjoyable as ever. Thanks for a great, relaxed contest
guys. IZ2FDU: Nice contest-glad to qso Ves-Season's
compliments - 73 Jim. HA2MN: Poor
condx, sri. Rig TS-530SP 100W into a whip and a LW. JL7FBV: Too bad no listening Canada
station. K0HW: Thanks for the
contest, I always enjoy working this contest and wish I could spend the entire
24 hours on it. K3TW: Many thanks
to the fine Canadian operators who make this such an enjoyable contest. K4UK: I really appreciated Bill, VE6AO
standing by to allow me to work NL7QT in Wrangle, AK on the frequency he was
running. It was fun. The courtesy shown by VE6AO is so
typical of the Canadian Contests and that's why I enjoy participating in
them. K4ZGB: First time to be in a
VE contest in several years. Not so sure that I like the contacts between U.S.
to U.S., U.S. to DX, etc. as contest points. Why not just Canadian contacts for
points? Enjoyed it and hope I can
make it again next year. K6MI: 7
QSL FOR VE!!!!. K6NA: Thanks for
running the event, I like the two-mode format. K9JIG: Need more VE's above 7150 or
working split on 40M.. KA6GDT: I
wish I could have spent more time competing I enjoyed it. KA8Q: Very enjoyable contest again. Conditions were rather poor except on 80
and one brief hour when western Canada came booming in on 20. Already looking forward to next
year. KB8VZY: Missed contest in 04,
had a great time, hoep to hear you next year. KE5DHY: My first time in this
contest. Lots of fun. MM5AHO: Band was noisy 80m to start and
little activity from VE. Didn't
hear any contestants outside Nth America.
N4MM: ARRL Vice
President. NG7Z: Best score
ever in this contest. It's a real pleasure to contest from my new QTH. The big
80M delta loop performed well n 40M but the QRN on 80M limited my score to some
degree. All in all, I'm very pleased with my score. OK2HZ: THE PROPAGATION CONDITIONS WERE
POORER THAN I SUPPOSED ... TF3AM:
Always fun to work Canada. This
time, condition was no good and only 4 contacts with VE and only 8 total. I look forward to better
conditions. Thanks for organize
this fine contest. VA3DX: Only 10
mtr was a local who gave me cw/ssb there.. Got on 40 ssb to run VE's, and had a
pile of JA's calling on the long path plus 5X1GS and SV9DXJ. VA3EC: Good fun. Thanks for the Q's. VA3EWP: Great contest, sure is nice to
see so many VE-VA’s. VA3MAH: Do to
work timetable, was unable to put in a good effort, first time running
Single-Op. VA3QR: Great band
conditions this year! VA3NQ: 1st
RAC contest from this qth- enjoyed myself. VA3ORP: In recognition of "Year of
the Veteran" all contacts made with WW2 army WS#19, RCAF AT1/AR2. VA3RGR: First time contest very
enjoyable need better antenna's for next year. Used "SD" logger highly
recommended. Thanks to all. VA3RKM:
Great contest for QRP. Not much QRM and good propagation. FT817, 5 watts, 80/40
15' high dipoles and 160m 1/4 wave wire, 20/15m ground-mounted vertical antenna.
Thanks to those copying the weak QRP signals, especially VE6RAC that worked me
on 4 bands, 80 thru 15m. VA3TTU:
Thank you and 73! VA3WSN: Seems
that many didn't read the contest information and were not aware of the date.
But those of us who did still had a great time. Thanks, RAC! VA3YY: Topband seemed to be in good
shape-usual conflict with Stew Perry contest-wish RAC could pick a different
weekend. VA7VVV: Dave Caddell and
one cat! VA7XX: Lots of fun
in another RAC Winter. I like the date move as I am normally away from the
station between Xmas and New Year's.
VE1AWP: PLEASE ADD CW ONLY CLASS IN NEXT YEARS CONTEST (We did ! … de VE5SF). VE1ACU: VY0, W1, VY2, VE8NT, where were
you? VE1RAC: In spite of some time
constraints and bad condx, this was a good time. Worked lost of Europeans on 40m in broad
daylight Saturday afternoon.
VE1RAR: My first RAC contest, antenna was down from previous storm. VE3CNA: Had fun-must get a laptop and
logging software 73 Gord. VE3CRU:
Great contest. Had fun, worked several on 40 using 160 dipole, next electronic
logging. VE3CTP: Although a slow
start was pleased with the results a true Canadian Holiday contest. Great
Fun! VE3DC: We had fun even though
it was tough for some of the guys get in the driveway with all the snow. Our new
guy had fun but wasn't impressed with the snow. It was extremely cold, but band
conditions were better than expected.
Dan and I had the most fun with the runs on 40 and 80. Thanks for all that worked us. See you in July. VE3FZ: Only had a few hours this year but
thought that I would put in log anyways.
VE3GNU: Many thanks & appreciation to the log
readers/checkers/collators! VE3OXX:
Where were the "hams" up north?
VE3SMA: Trying out new rig.
Elecraft K2 at about 20 watts to various apartment balcony antennas, plus
FT-290R and 2 el quad on 2m. VE3SY:
Friday night got off to a slow start after my newly acquired Kenwood
TL-922decided to play games with its antenna relay leaving me with poor
receive. At: first I thought the
80m poor rx was due to the vertical - my dipole came down a week ago - but it
was the TR relay. So I pulled the
amp and spent the next couple of hours removing burnishing and returning the
relay. Sure is a well built amp
however accessing the TR relay was not well thought out by the Kenwood
Engineers. Great conditions for the test with timely E-W openings on 15. And WOW! What can we say about the fantastic
turnout of VO1 stations. I counted
14 VO1 stations on 80 metres alone.
Also nice to hear activity from VY1 and VE8 land and even better when
they called me. Not sure how
many RAC bonus stations where on but there was a great turnout of bonus stations
as well with the VE6RAC group rallying a great Multi-Multi operation. For the
first time I took a crack at dusting off the old Brass straight key and made a
few CW contacts on each band. Good
to hear other Contest Club Ontario stations. VE3SYK: No propagation on 2/6/10 during
contest. VE3TMT: Great contest!
Will be back next year. VE3TPZ:
Bands were not very good on Friday Nite, Were better on Saturday. VE3VMP: My second year contesting es my
second time in this contest.
Enjoyed both CW es SSB, Tnx RAC.
VE3WMB: Not much operating time, but as always lots of fun. VE4BAW: Came across it by accident,
heard VE6RAC, I look forward to next contest. VE4LR: Would be better starting
Saturday, didn't look like many VE4s were out. VE4MG: This is the most qs I've ever
made in a contest-bravo to all the VE3s who took part-73. VE4YU: Thanks all participants for
another fun CANADIAN contest. CU in July!
VE5RI: More unusual condx in
this contest. 20 shut down within minutes of sundown and did not revive until
not long before sunrise. From then
on 10, 160, 80 and 40 were quiet and productive. Our only equipment on, lots of
action on 20. 15 was good during
daylight. Nothing here troubles were operator generated in our old 486 computers
running TRLog - some day we'll learn! We had two new ops, Tony and Don, visit
with us and do a bit of operating. We hope we can add these new contesters to
our ranks. Season's Greetings to all our radio contesting friends and thanks to
Sam and RAC for another one of our fun RAC contests. VE6FS: Sure hope the contest is between
Christmas & New Year for 2006?!
VE6RFM: Lots of fun watching Will, VA6WGO, (TI2WGO), run a CW pile-up and
search and pounce ssb mults at the same time. VE6SF: Everyone was very
cooperative & courteous, but no more paper logging for me. VE7ALN: Very enjoyable contest. VE7FO: This was a newbie training
session. Went M/M because the
object was to have the newbies make Qs.
Didn't want the ten minute rule to get in the way of making them. VE7IO: Despite poor band conditions
there were plenty of stations to work.
Thanks to all the hams who gave me the opportunity to enter their call
into my log. VE7JKZ: 160M was fun.
Propagation poor on Friday night.
VE7NA: Great Fun Good to Re-New Friendship and Season
Greetings. VE7NI: Great fun as
usual and good band conditions! Thanks to all who gave the extra time to copy my
QRP signal. VE7WU: Good path to
Ontario very good on 20 meters. 15 could of used more action. Amazing how the
points add up near the end. Thanks to those who make it happen. 73. VE7XF: 10m was a bust. Took an hour off
to chase the KP5 on 20cw, with no luck.
VE9LMN: Great contest! First time doing a contest. W4RK: Canadian operators were
terrific! W2LHL: As usual, forgot
there is no separate CW category, oh well (Separate CW category Starts next year
– ed.). WA2VYA: Really enjoy this
contest. W4TDB: Outstanding
contest. I will make a full time
effort next year. W6ZZZ: Just some
S&P. W8BD: As always, The most
enjoyable test of the year. We could use a designated six meter freq. W9EBV: KB9KEG and KB9OFM contested from
the Fond du Lac Lighthouse this year and we sure had fun!!! See you all next
year. Signed Randy and Dennis. 73.
W9RE: Great activity-wished I could have spent more time. WB8JUI: How about a CW only category
next year? (You Bet !). XM5BCS: I enjoyed - band wasn't good
first 12 hrs but sure improved.
