What The Calculator Does

This calculator computes the Received Power, Received Voltage (RMS), S meter reading and Path Loss for a line-of-sight radio system in free space. The concepts of Path Loss and Power Received are presented in the September/October 2005 TCA (The Canadian Amateur) magazine. They can also be found in the ARRL Antenna Book (any edition). The line-of-sight system contains: a transmitter, a lossy cable between the transmitter and a transmitting antenna, a receiving antenna separated by R Km from the transmitting antenna, and a lossy cable between the receiving antenna and the receiver.

How To Use The Calculator

To use the calculator click on an input box and type in the value.  There are 9 input boxes  and 4 output boxes:

   Box 1: Transmitter Power [Watts]
   Box 2: Range [Km]
   Box 3: Frequency [MHz]
   Box 4: Transmit Cable Loss [dB per 100 Feet]
   Box 5: Transmit Cable Length [Feet]
   Box 6: Gain of Transmitting Antenna [dBi]
   Box 7: Receive Cable Loss [dB per 100 Feet]
   Box 8: Receive Cable Length [Feet]
   Box 9: Gain of Receiving Antenna [MHz]
   Box 9: Other Losses(Cables, Tuners, Excess Path Loss, Miscellaneous Losses)

Now, press Calculate and the results are displayed in the remaining boxes.  If you do not know the values for the cable loss at the frequency of operation, 
it can be found in the " Times Microwave Calculator " for almost all coaxial cables.
