RAC Bulletin 2013-031E - Radio Amateurs of Canada Supports Dr. Bruce Gracie as Canada's nomination for Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union

The Radio Amateurs of Canada is pleased to announce that your national society will be supporting the nomination of Dr. Bruce Gracie to the position of Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The Government of Canada has announced its intention to nominate Dr. Gracie for the position which will be voted on by member nations in October of 2014 in Busan, Republic of Korea. We received word of this by way of a letter from the Deputy Minister of Industry Canada, John Knubley, to the President of Radio Amateurs of Canada.

Dr. Gracie is the current Chairman of ITU-T Telecommunications Standardization Advisory Group. Having completed a Ph.D. in 1976 and he has worked in a variety of capacities in the Canadian federal government responsible for telecommunications and information technology matters. His recent duties included chairmanships of various government/industry committees focused on the preparations for ITU conferences and assemblies (such as the 2012 World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly, 2012 Radiocommunication Assembly, and the 2012 World Radicommunication Conference). Among his other recent responsibilities at ITU were the following: Chairman of the Finance and Administration Committee at the 2002 Plenipotentiary Conference, Chairman of the 2006 Council, Chairman of the Radiocommunication Advisory Group from 2000 to 2007, Chairman of the 2007 Radiocommunication Assembly, and Chairman of the Administration and Management Committee at the 2010 Plenipotentiary Conference. His current responsibilities include serving as ITU Councillor for Canada, as well as Chairman of the Council Working Group on Financial and Human Resources and Chairman of the Telecommunication Standardization Advisory Group (TSAG).

RAC intends to communicate with our fellow societies in the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) in order to encourage them to influence their government to support Canada's nomination.
