Lester B. Pearson High School

Amateur Radio Club: 2002-2003

Members of the Lester B. Pearson High School Amateur Radio Club, in Burlington, Ontario, make their first calls. The Club was started in 2001 by Elmers Hugh McCully VE3AYR and Norm Freiden VE3CZI, as a project of the Burlington Amateur Radio Club, with teacher Mark Richardson VA3OBO.

Combining the study of Amateur Radio with their physics curriculum, the students met weekly after school throughout the spring semester. Twenty-five grade 11, 12 and OAC students (12 boys, 13 girls) wrote and passed their Basic Amateur Radio exam this May.

Back, left to right - Darren Lue Choy VA3MOW, Jovanna Lubarda, VA3JLO and Jennie Saini VA3JEA. Front row - Brad Needham VA3RZR, Sara Eichinger VE3YEY and Hina Jhawer VA3CSI.Using their club station, with equipment donated by John Rowland VE3NCP, the students have enjoyed meeting local hams. They also made contacts across Canada and the U.S.A., as well as with hams in England, Scotland, the Netherlands, Bermuda, Jamaica and the Antarctic. They were interested listeners as well in the recent Amateur Radio interview of American astronaut Barbara Hall and Canadian astronaut Dave Williams, through the link between the Ontario Science Center and the Johnson Space Center, using the Burlington IRLP node 2680.

Club plans for next year include practicing CW skills, developing a program with schools in Jamaica, upgrading the growing antenna farm on the school roof, getting on HF, exploring the digital modes, and encouraging more students to become involved in what is becoming a popular club at Pearson.
