Shaftesbury High School in Winnipeg, Manitoba has a program that encourages kids to participate in the world of science and technology and the teachers use Amateur Radio as a key tool. They regularly launch balloons and repeaters to the edge of space, release robot aircraft from altitude and have built Canada's only ISS telebridge. What they are really doing is building Canada's next generation of scientists and engineers.

Congratulations Shaftesbury High School, Pembina Trails School Division, Winnipeg on your leadership and dedication to education. We tip our hats to teachers Rob Streimer, VE4SHS and Adrian Deakin, VA4AMD, and to Principal Stan Weibe. When contacted Rob gave kudos not only to the Team at Shaftesbury but also to Stefan Wagener, VE4NSA, Paul Reisdorf, VE4AMS and Alan Thoren, VE4YZ, for their expertise, hard work and encouragement. There is more to come from that crew. Stay tuned.
From left to right: Bryce Jenkins, VA4VBC, Jordan Bowley, VA4JRB, Dylan Fijal, VA4DFJ, Rob Striemer, VE4SHS, Alex Motnenko, Kendra McTavish, VA4MCT and Adrian Deakin, VA4AMD. Dylan is representing SHARP/SATS/Amateur Radio/Shaftesbury High School /Canada in England at an international science fair/symposium (VE4JPI had a lot to do with this). Dylan was planning on getting his paperwork done through RAC before he goes so that he could use his HT in England. I look forward to reading about his experiences there and seeing his photos. Dylan handled most of the recent contact with the astronaut on the International Space Station and he will be with Adrian at the ground station on Sunday (but not Saturday). Two other Shaftesbury hams are going to Australia in September on a similar venture. Twin brothers Navjot Garcha, VE4NSG and Diljot Garcha, VE4DSG. We are blessed by the educational fruits of Amateur Radio but even more so by the cooperation and efforts of a very large number of individuals.
– Rob Striemer, VE4SHS
