“The Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) is the country’s largest annual youth science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) event, bringing together top young scientists and their projects, selected by our national network of over 100 regional STEM fairs in every province and territory. The CWSF STEM Expo features hands-on interactive activities, including experimenting, making, coding, games, robotics, Indigenous knowledge, inspiring presentations, exciting demonstrations and more by companies, organizations, agencies, institutions, museums and other STEM-related organizations.” – CWSF website.
Radio Amateurs of Canada has participated at the CWSF STEM Expo since 2017 when it was held in Regina, Saskatchewan. As a result of the pandemic, the Canada-Wide Science Fair was held as a virtual event from 2020 to 2022.
Radio Amateurs of Canada was pleased to be able to have a booth at the Youth STEM Expo when it was once again held as an in-person event at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Edmonton, Alberta from May 17-19, 2023.
Volunteers from the Quarter City Amateur Radio Club and the Northern Alberta Amateur Radio Club were able to introduce students, teachers, parents and other participants to the “Wonderful World of Amateur Radio” as shown in the photos and described below:
“We are enjoying interacting with many youths. We have had a lot of students trying their hand at sending Morse code and we sent some texts to them using Winlink and talked up our hobby to a lot of people.
Our demo frequency is 7.100 MHz and we call CQ at the top and bottom of each hour from 0930 to 1430 MDT May 17,18 and 19 from the Edmonton Convention Centre.”
