The Canadian Amateur (TCA), Canada’s premiere national magazine devoted to Amateur Radio, is published six times per year and is the membership journal of the Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC). It is available in both print and digital versions (eTCA). Members of RAC, Canada’s sole national Amateur Radio organization, receive TCA automatically.
At 64-pages per issue and reaching approximately 4,500 readers, TCA offers news and views on the Canadian Amateur Radio scene from coast to coast to coast. It includes regular columns, features and technical articles of interest to Amateur Radio operators. In addition, a Coming Events calendar, Feedback, QSL Bureau information and coverage of regulatory issues are also provided.

Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC) is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Editor for The Canadian Amateur, Canada’s premiere national magazine devoted to Amateur Radio. As the national association representing Amateur Radio operators across Canada, RAC promotes the advancement of Amateur Radio through advocacy, education, emergency communications and community engagement.
The Canadian Amateur (TCA) is published six times per year and is available in both print and digital (eTCA) formats. It is distributed to RAC members nationwide.
Position Type
This position will be structured as a contract role. It will be expected that the successful candidate will have other interests outside of this function such that the position will not be a “dependent contractor”.
Position Overview
The Editor is ultimately responsible to the RAC Board of Directors and shall report to and take instructions from the RAC President or as they may direct. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Leading the editorial vision and managing the full production cycle of The Canadian Amateur magazine
- Achieving all publication goals and meeting all applicable deadlines
- Planning and preparing all content, coordinating contributor and advertising submissions, and editing columns, articles and other submissions
- Designing the magazine and preparing PDF files in both print and digital formats

Qualifications
- Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills
- Proficiency with desktop publishing software (e.g., Adobe InDesign and Photoshop)
- Understanding of artificial intelligence tools for writing
- Excellent organizational and project management abilities

Preferred Experience
- Experience in magazine publishing, journalism or communications
- Ability to manage multi-platform content (print, web, social media)
- Experience with advertising coordination and production workflows
- Experience working with contributors, advertisers and printers
- Familiarity with Amateur Radio and bilingual communication (English/French are assets)
Key Responsibilities
Editorial Leadership
- Plan, develop and manage the editorial content for each issue of The Canadian Amateur
- Solicit, review and edit articles from contributors across Canada and internationally
- Collaborate with regular columnists and guest authors
- Ensure a balanced mix of technical, operating, historical and community-focused content
- Reflect the priorities and activities of RAC and the Canadian Amateur Radio community

Content Development
- Source and develop feature articles, technical content and operating stories
- Work with RAC leadership to communicate organizational initiatives and regulatory updates
- Encourage submissions from clubs, individual Amateurs and special interest groups
- Ensure that all content developed can also be used for all other RAC communication vehicles including, without limitation, the RAC website, blogs, social media and other items

Editorial and Production Editing
- Perform substantive editing to improve structure, clarity and completeness of submissions
- Conduct stylistic editing to ensure consistency of tone and readability
- Carry out copy editing to ensure accuracy, grammar, terminology and factual correctness
- Perform production editing and proofreading to prepare content for layout and publication
- Review layouts to ensure accuracy of text, captions, tables and illustrations

Production and Design
- Design and layout the magazine using professional publishing software (e.g., Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop)
- Prepare images, graphics and full-colour layouts
- Prepare files for both print (grayscale) and digital (colour) distribution
- Coordinate with printers and digital platforms to ensure timely publication

Advertising and Sponsorship
- Manage advertising placements within the magazine
- Coordinate with advertisers to ensure materials meet specifications
- Maintain and grow relationships with advertisers and sponsors

Publication Management
- Maintain production schedules and meet deadlines
- Ensure editorial accuracy, clarity and high-quality standards
- Oversee both the print and digital publication (eTCA)
Detailed Responsibilities
Magazine Production – The Canadian Amateur
The Editor is responsible for managing, editing and designing the magazine as follows:
- Plan editorial calendars in collaboration with contributors and RAC officials
- Perform substantive editing, copy editing and proofreading
- Write original content as required (e.g., profiles, awards features)
- Liaise with columnists, Section Managers and contributors through to publication
- Coordinate Section News content and approvals
- Work with advertisers on submissions and placement
- Liaise with printers and oversee production processes
- Design covers and all interior pages in full colour
- Prepare both print-ready and digital versions of each issue
- Publish the eTCA edition on the RAC website
