On Thursday, May 30 and Friday May 31, representatives from Radio Amateurs of Canada, the Ottawa Amateur Radio Club (OARC) and the Ottawa Valley Mobile Radio Club (OVMRC) will introduce participants to the “Wonderful World of Amateur Radio”. They will  be joined by Daniel Alvarez, VE3FCT, a young, enthusiastic Radio Amateur from the Toronto area who operates frequently from the Ontario Science Centre station VE3OSC. The Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) will take place at Carleton University in Ottawa from May 25 to June 4.

“Hosted annually by Youth Science Canada, this extraordinary event brings together our nation’s brightest young minds, celebrating their passion for STEM and innovation. Witness the future of STEM through the eyes of our youth. From groundbreaking research to inventive solutions, each project at the CWSF is a window into the incredible potential of our young scientists. The fair is a vibrant display of elaborate presentations, engaging demonstrations, and thought-provoking discussions.”

The Canada-Wide Science Fair showcases the talents of students from grades 7 through 12, winners of their respective regional STEM fairs. These young scientists represent the future of innovation in Canada, displaying projects that span health, environmental sciences, engineering, computer science, and more.

“Amateur Radio is vast and highly diverse hobby and service. We can’t demonstrate everything so we will show off a few selected things we like such as a simple HF SSB and CW station, the networking possibilities of VHF/UHF digital voice, communications by Amateur satellites and good old Morse Code.  Getting the participants to send their names in Morse Code is always popular at the Canada-Wide Science Fair.

Canada-Wide Science Fair celebrates a return to Ottawa, May 26 to 31, 2024

OTTAWA, May 6, 2024 – The 62nd edition of the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF), Canada’s largest annual youth STEM event, will be held at Carleton University from May 26 to 31, 2024. This year, 387 student finalists from all 13 provinces and territories will gather to display their STEM projects and compete for over $1.3 million in scholarships, awards and prizes.

“We are thrilled to bring the CWSF back to Ottawa, where it will not only highlight the outstanding talents of the country’s young scientists and innovators, but also offer an enriching experience to thousands of attendees, both in-person and virtually,” says Reni Barlow, executive director at Youth Science Canada. “This event is a testament to the relentless curiosity, ingenuity and perseverance of our youth, whose ideas can drive us toward a better future.”

The year’s event begins with an opening ceremony and two days of project judging. On May 30 and 31, the public can meet the students and explore the projects in the Project Zone. Visitors can look forward to various engaging activities, including the STEM Expo, which showcases more than 50 exhibits from leading educational institutions, agencies, companies, museums, and other STEM-related organizations. CWSF visitors can also participate in a scavenger hunt and hands-on science demonstrations. CWSF expects 8,000 in-person visitors from Ottawa and surrounding areas throughout the public viewing days.

In addition to the in-person activities, the CWSF will continue its popular virtual component, offering an online platform where visitors can explore the projects and participate in digital activities. The virtual fair attracts some 30,000 visitors, enabling STEM enthusiasts and supporters across Canada and beyond to engage with the country’s best youth STEM projects.

“The energy that CWSF brings to Ottawa is amazing, and we are excited to showcase the creativity and dedication of the finalists to local and virtual audiences,” says Trevor Maguire, board chair of Youth Science Canada. “We should celebrate every student who embraces the curiosity that is within each one of us and completes a STEM project.”

The event will culminate with the CWSF Awards Ceremony live streamed on Thursday, May 30, celebrating the outstanding achievements of these inspirational students. The Grand Award winners will participate in a live streamed panel discussion on Friday, May 31, at 10:00 am EDT in the Carleton University Fieldhouse.
