Thank You and Goodbye!

Sam Ferris, VE5SF – RAC Canada Winter Contest Manager

It’s hard to believe that Bart Ritchie, VE5CPU, and I have been serving as the RAC Contest Managers continuously since 2003 – that’s 22 years! It has been our pleasure to serve the Radiosport community but given our advancing ages we have decided it is time to hand the reins to other volunteers. Vlad Milutinovic, VE3JM, will take over as the RAC Canada Winter Contest Manager and Jim Roberts, VE7ZO, will succeed Bart as the RAC Canada Day Contest Manager.

We have made significant progress in consistent and accurate contest scoring – no, your logging program does not always score your log correctly. One year, approximately 66% of logs as submitted had incorrectly computed scores! Thanks to Bart’s computer and programming expertise, we are all now able to both submit Cabrillo logs and retrieve earned certificates online – significant progress since our beginning when we used pivot tables, email and paper logs.

Conditions were not the best on the high HF bands for the 2025 running of the RAC Canada Winter Contest. Participation fell significantly by approximately 31 percent with 820 entries in total and there were no new records established.

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Alan Goodacre, VE3HX, on Wednesday morning June 18, 2025. Alan was a long-time sponsor of two plaques in the RAC Contests: the Russ Coleson, VK4XA, Memorial Plaque in the RAC Canada Winter Contest and the Larry Kayser, VA3LK, Memorial Plaque in the
RAC Canada Day Contest. Our condolences to all who knew Alan.

Your contest managers sincerely appreciate the increased use of Cabrillo-based log entries. The contest log upload site at
www.contest.rac.ca/ has proven to be an efficient manner in which to submit contest logs for both the RAC Canada Winter and RAC Canada Day Contests. Processing completed by the upload system has also saved the log checker considerable time. Additionally, Cabrillo format files significantly reduce the workload associated with producing the contest results.

Current versions of popular contest programs – such as N1MM, Writelog, N3FJP Log, CT, NA and Super Duper – produce Cabrillo files that can be readily handled by new scoring software developed by VE5CPU. Contest certificates will be available at www.contest.rac.ca for those winning a certificate as denoted in the results.

Commencing with the 2024 contest year paper logs are no longer being accepted. Electronic Cabrillo-format log files must be submitted within 14 days form the end of the contest. All entries should be submitted in digital format using the contest log submission system or while still supported, via email at .

Thanks and congratulations to all for participating in the RAC Canada Winter Contest 2025 and good luck in 2026 and beyond. Once again, special thanks go out to the operators of the RAC call signs. Hopefully, the solar cycle will remain at a relatively high level in the coming years and we will have good propagation for the next RAC Canada Winter Contest scheduled for December 27, 2026.

Stay tuned for an updated version of the rules for the RAC Canada Contests for 2026 coming soon.
